Chiropractic Education & Career Guidance

The use of chiropractic can be traced back to the beginning of recorded time. Spinal manipulations were used in China and Greece between 2700 and 1500 BC, and the Greek physician Hippocrates wrote to encourage spinal knowledge: "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."

The modern chiropractic profession was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. Long interested in anatomy and physiology, Palmer discovered spinal manipulation after talking with a man who explained to Palmer that he'd lost his hearing after bending over and feeling something pop in his back. Palmer made the connection that an out-of-place vertebra caused the deafness, and a manipulation procedure restored both the vertebra and the man's hearing. Palmer coined the term chiropractic - chiro means hand, while practic refers to practice or operation and soon started the country's first college of chiropractic, Palmer School and Infirmary of Chiropractic, in 1898.

The basic philosophy of chiropractic incorporates the body's ability to heal itself with natural treatment methods. Surgery and medication are avoided. Chiropractors believe that having a healthy nervous system, and a healthy spine, is the key to overall wellness.

In 2002, there were 49,000 chiropractors in the United States. The profession is expected to see faster than average job growth as more and more people seek health treatments that are alternative and/or complementary to western medicine. The median income for chiropractors was $65,330, with the middle 50% earning between $44,140 and $102,400.

Chiropractors must be licensed by the state in which they practice, and each state has its own licensing requirements. The basic requirements include a 4-5 year education at an accredited college or university that offers 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical time.
